Green-Tex

Project name

Enhancing Danube Green Textile and Garment Production and Consumption

Programme

Interreg Danube Region Programme

Duration of the project

01.2024 – 06.2026

Partner countries

Slovenia, Romania, Hungary, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, Bulgaria

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT

Production of textiles is one of the world’s most polluting industries, contributing 20% of industrial wastewater and significant greenhouse gas emissions. Analysis shows that 86% of clothing is landfilled or incinerated after use and only 1% is recycled into new ones.

The EU Waste Framework Directive (WFD) therefore requires separate collection of textile waste in the EU by 2025, but many regions lack effective systems to meet the requirements.

The Green-Tex project aims to boost sustainable textile practices in the Danube region by promoting cross national cooperation, increasing sustainability and encouraging the transition to a circular economy. The project will develop, test and validate new solutions along the entire value chain, from design to waste collection, incorporating digital tools such as an online map of collection points.

The project involves partners from different sectors and uses a multi-sectoral, integrative approach to achieve a circular economy in textiles. The project consortium consists of 11 partners + 3 associate partners.

This project is supported by the Interreg Danube Region Programme with co-financing from the European Regional Development Fund.
